Read the median first

Half of all roofing companies on Google have 13 reviews or fewer. For a trade where the average sale is a five-figure purchase and the homeowner researches before calling, that number is remarkably low. It tells you two things at once: most of your competitors have almost no social proof, and the bar to clear the middle of the market is embarrassingly easy to reach.

The bar to win, though, is somewhere else entirely. Google's map pack shows three businesses. In any metro with real competition, the three showing are near the top of the distribution, and the 90th percentile here is 141 reviews. That is the target. The median is only where you stop being invisible.

The spread is extreme. 14.8% of roofing companies have no reviews at all, 62% have fewer than 25, and at the other end 2.4% have passed 500. The mean of 67.5 is dragged upward by a small number of large regional and storm-restoration operations working several states at once. Ignore the mean. Compare yourself against the percentiles: 2 at the 25th, 13 at the median, 50 at the 75th.

Roofing has a structural reason for low counts that plumbing does not. A roofing crew might complete 60 to 200 jobs a year where a plumbing shop completes 2,000 service calls. Every completed job has to produce a review, because you do not get another chance at volume.

Stars do not separate you

The average rating in the set is 4.7 and 80.4% of roofing companies sit at 4.5 or better. Nearly half, 45.3%, show a perfect 5.0, which mostly means they have very few reviews. A 5.0 with six reviews reads as new. A 4.7 with 180 reads as established, and it wins the call.

Where the rating genuinely matters is at the floor. 9.1% are below 4.0, and on a purchase this size, below 4.0 the homeowner simply moves to the next name. Another 10.2% have no rating at all and are effectively not in the running.

The website gap is the biggest opening in the trade

22.6% of roofing companies list no website on their Google profile, while 77.4% do. The companies with a site carry a median of 21 reviews. The companies without carry 3.

We are not claiming the website produces the reviews. Serious operators do both. But on a job worth what a roof is worth, a homeowner comparing three contractors will open the websites, look for a license number, look for photos of finished work, and look for financing terms. A profile with no site loses that comparison before anyone picks up a phone. It is also the clearest signal that a competitor is not going to fight you for anything.

Hours, photos and how reachable you look

97% of listings carry a photo, so a profile without one is instantly in the bottom few percent of a trade where the whole product is visual. 27.2% list no hours at all, and 17.3% claim 24-hour availability, which is a claim worth keeping honest since emergency tarping calls arrive at night after wind. 42.8% list Saturday hours and 25.9% list Sunday. Saturday is when homeowners walk their property and notice missing shingles, so a closed Saturday is a real cost. Only 20.5% publish an email address.

What to do with this

  1. Pull your own numbers. Open your Google Business Profile and write down review count, rating, whether a website is linked, and your listed hours.
  2. Place yourself honestly. Below 13 is the bottom half. Below 50 is the bottom three quarters. 141 and above is where map-pack winners live.
  3. If you are in the 22.6% with no website, fix that before you buy a single lead. Five pages, tap-to-call, license number, real job photos, financing terms.
  4. Put a review ask on every completed job, not on the good ones. At roofing volume that is the only way the count moves. The reviews guide has the exact script and timing.
  5. List real hours including Saturday, and turn on missed-call text-back. Run your own average job value through the calculator to see what unanswered calls cost at roofing tickets.
  6. Only then start spending on leads. Paid traffic pointed at a profile with four reviews and no website funds your competitor's education, and at $150 to $400 a lead that is expensive tuition.

Method

This report aggregates 102,385 public Google Business Profile listings collected from Google Maps searches for roofing companies across every US state, deduplicated by place. Review counts and ratings are as displayed on the listing at collection time. "Website listed" means the profile links to any URL; we classify the URL as an owned domain, a social profile, or a free site builder by hostname. Figures are refreshed monthly.
